WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Around 1:00 a.m. Monday morning, Winston-Salem Police were called to a reported shooting in the 1100 Block of Burke Village Lane.
After arriving at the apartment complex, officers found Gevontae Daeron Morrison with an apparent gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were taken by officers and later EMS, but they were to no avail. Morrison died from his injuries.
After further investigation, police have learned that Morrison was in a verbal fight outside the apartment complex with unknown people. It is reported that Morrison was walking back to his car when he was shot multiple times before the suspects fled the scene. Detectives believe the suspect(s) and victim knew each another.
There were multiple witnesses to this incident for police to interview. None of the witnesses cooperated with responding officers though. Police say the investigation is still ongoing and that new confirmed information will be made public when available.
Morrison's next-of-kin have been notified of his death. This is Winston-Salem's 36th homicide of 2023, up from 26 at this point in 2022. All of 2022 only had 35 homicides, so this marks a deadlier year already for Winston-Salem.
